Kinetics of the Reaction between Carbon Dioxide and Glycidyl Methacrylate using 18-Crown-6 as a Catalyst

Carbon dioxide was absorbed into organic solutions of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in a stirred semi-batch tank having a planar gas-liquid interface at 101.3 kPa. From the absorption rates of carbon dioxide, the reaction kinetics between carbon dioxide and GMA were studied using 18-crown-6 as a catalyst. The reaction rate constants were estimated for the mass transfer mechanism, which is accompanied by a pseudo-first-order reaction. An empirical correlation between the reaction rate constants and the solubility parameters of the solvents, such as toluene, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, and dimethyl sulfoxide, is presented.
