Regeneration Properties of Potassium Based Solid Sorbents for CO2 Absorption |

The regeneration properties of sorbents prepared by impregnation of potassium carbonate were evaluated by observing the amount of CO2 desorbed by heating at 150-400oC in a fixed bed reactor. To understand the regeneration property in detail, a TPD test was performed after CO2 absorption at 60oC. Only one CO2 peak in the TPD was found in the case of K2CO3/AC and K2CO3/MgO. The peak temperatures of K2CO3/AC and K2CO3/MgO were at about 130oC and 360oC, respectively. However, two CO2 peaks were observed in the TPD result for K2CO3/Al2O3. One peak was found at 106oC and the other was observed at temperature above 290oC. XRD pattern of K2CO3/AC after CO2 absorption showed only KHCO3 crystal structure which could be easily regenerated at low temperature like 150oC. XRD pattern of K2CO3/MgO also showed one phase which was assigned to K2Mg(CO3)2. While, XRD pattern of K2CO3/Al2O3 sorbent after CO2 absorption showed two phases assigned KHCO3 and KAl(CO3)2(OH)2. The decrease in the CO2 capture capacity of K2CO3/Al2O3 and K2CO3/MgO at lower temperature than 250oC could be explained through the formation of KAl(CO3)2(OH)2 and K2Mg(CO3)2, respectively, which was not completely converted in the original K2CO3 phase. |
