Resonant tunneling quantum dot transistors or high-gain heterojunction multiple quantum dot laser arrays are two potential applications of the title compounds. The new materials are composed of periodic arrays of all-space filling beta-cages containing atomically precise, organized assemblies of single-size and shape M4X clusters, (see figure).
