The synthesis of phase-pure HTSC materials with well-defined superconductivity properties is facilitated by a sound knowledge of the equilibria between the various compounds present in the system. An in-depth study of the Ca-Sr-Bi-Cu-O system has revealed new relationships between the structures of the superconducting phases and sheds light on the complex mechanism which is operational during the formation of superconducting materials.
