Competitive forces increasingly link fates of railroads and power generators
The relationship between utilities and the railroad industry lakes on added significance in a competitive environment where coal still provides more than 50 percent of our nation's power. Because of electric utility deregulation-the impact it has on coal shippers and the entrance of new players into coal supply, generation ownership and power trading-future business relationships between generators and railroads may be substantially different than in the period following deregulation of the railroad industry.
