The effect of the vinyl acetate content on the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of materials intended for the production of cable insulation
Eight ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) with a mass content of vinyl acetate 28% and 40%, resp. were mixed together up to 15% and then blended with low d. polyethylene, a plasticizer and a filler to produce cable insulating materials. Hardness, tensile strength, tensile modulus and abrasion resistance as well as absorbability and fire resistance of the cable materials were detd. in accordance with the relevant stds. Increasing a share of EVA with a higher content of vinyl acetate in the insulation mixt. resulted in a decrease in hardness, tensile modulus, tensile strength and abrasion resistance, as well as in an increase of water absorption and fire resistance.
