Uphill and Selective Transport of Uranyl Ions Through 2,3-Epithiopropyl Methacrylate-Dodecyl Methacrylate-Methacrylamide Propyl Trimethyl Ammonium-Chloride Terpolymer Membranes
Anion-exchange membranes were prepared with 2,3-epithiopropyl methacrylate(ETMA)-dodecyl methacrylate(DOMA)methacrylamide propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(MAPTAC) terpolymers. Transport of uranyl ions in sulfuric acid solution through the membranes was studied by using a system containing UO2SO4 in sulfuric acid solution (left side) and carbonate solution (right side). Uranyl ions in sulfuric acid solution could be transported uphill through the anion-exchange membranes. The uphill transport of uranyl ions was greatly affected by the composition of the membranes and the concentration of carbonate solution as receiving solution. Uranyl ions could be selectively transported uphill from the eluate of sulfuric acid containing alkali earth metal ions or cupric ions. The uphill transport mechanism of uranyl ions in sulfuric acid solution through the anion-exchange membranes was discussed.
