Segregation Processes of Bulk Solids and their Simulation by the Discrete Element Method
When handling bulk solids, pile formation is a typical process, leading to segregation of the particles due to different properties. This process is experimentally investigated using binary mixtures of spheres. The degree of segregation is characterized by a segregation number, which is dependent on the different experimental parameters. The subsequent simulation of the process using the discrete element method is performed using the same experimental conditions. There is a good agreement between experimental and simulative results, if the parameter settings for the simulation are fitted in an adequate manner.
