Formability criteria for cold heading applications
Criteria for assessing potential defects during the cold heading process are presented. The Cockroft and Latham (C-L) criterion for ductile fracture is used for evaluation of edge cracks, which result from tensile circumferential stress. Internal cracks, arising from adiabatic shear bands, are evaluated using several different criteria. The methodology is illustrated by simulating the multi-sequence heading of an industrial fastener.
