Structure and Optical Properties of Polyamide Containing Porphyrin Unit
A series of polyamides containing porphyrin unit derivatized by attaching flexible alkyl moieties in the main chain (PPC-6, PPC-8, and PPC-10) as well as in the side chain (PPT-8 and PPT-12) were studied for their thermal properties by DSC and TGA, molecular packing by wide angle X-ray diffraction. film surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy and optical properties by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Thermal stability and packing order found to be the better in PPT series. The large porphyrin unit appeared to determine the overall chain packing, resulting in similar diffraction patterns regardless of the position and length of the flexible alkyl moieties. Films were prepared by different techniques such as spin coating as well as precipitation on a glass slide or on water surface. The surface of the films showed different morphology depending on the molecular structure and the preparation methods. Films of PPT series prepared on the water surface yielded finer surface textures. A Soret band (450 nm) and two other characteristic peaks of the porphyrin unit were observed in the UV/Vis spectrum. The band shift with the length of the alkyl chains was noted in the PPC samples but not in the PPT samples. The absorption bands also reduced their intensities with time and the degradation rate appeared to be dependent on the molecular structure and film preparation conditions, thus the microstructure of the films.
