Synthesis and Physical Properties of Two-Component Polyurethane Coatings Containing Alkyd and Polyester Polyols
Modified polyesters containing alkyd and polyester polyols were synthesized. Alkyd modified polyesters (THAOs) were synthesized from the polycondensation of 1,4-butanediol, adipic acid, and the esterification adduct (THA-TMP) of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (THA) and trimethylolpropane (TMP). The THA contents of the adduct were 10, 20, and 30 wt%. Two-component polyurethane coatings were prepared by blending THAOs with Desmodur IL, the polyisocyanate component. The two-component polyurethane coatings had hsorter drying times and longer pot-life as the THA content increased, as can be expected from the characteristics of alkyd component. This shows that the two-component polyurethane coatings can be used as rapid drying coatings.
