Electropolishing and anodic passivation of Ti6Al7Nb alloy
Corn. Ti6A17Nb alloy samples were electropolished in acidic Fions-contg. baths at current d.30 or 50 A/dm(2) for 180s to 500s, passivated as anodes in soln. of H(2)SiF(6) (concn. 1-20%) for 300 s and then studied for surface roughness and electrochem. corrosion resistance (potentiodynamic method) in 5% soln. of NaCl The best results (roughness 0.08 mu m, corrosion potential 307 mV) were achieved when the electropolishing bath contained H(2)SO(4), (CH(2)OH)(2) and NH(4)F and the passivation was carried out at 60 V in 20% soln. of H(2)SiF(6). The formation of TiO(2) layer on the sample surface was evidenced by XPS spectroscopy.
