The amounts and reactivities of carbon deposits formed on Co/Al2O3 catalysts in cracking reactions
A wet-impregnated 1.7, 3.5, 9.3, or 15.3%Co/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were used to crack 40 cm(3)/min (i) propane (300/2, 350/2, 350/6, 400degreesC/1 hr.), (ii) ethylene (300degreesC/1 hr.), or (iii) acetylene (150/1, 200/1, 200/6, 250/1, 300degreesC/1 hr.). The resulting C was detd. by heating the catalyst 15degrees/min to 800degreesC (temp. -programmed oxidn. with (8:92) O-2-Ar) or 900degreesC (temp. -programmed surface hydrogenation with (5:95) H-2-Ar). As the deg. of unsatn. and cracking temp. were increased, the C deposit rose, (i) 0.08-1.68, 0.21-2.43, 0.21-7.40, 0.26-10.2%; (ii) 2.40-7.18% (9.3% catalyst); (iii) 0.46-46.1% (9.3% catalyst). The C formed in each reaction could be totally removed by oxidn. at 600degreesC.
