Catalytic oxidation of norbornene to norcamphor
Certain specific features of the liquid-phase oxidation of norbornene and its methyl derivative by urea peroxide in the presence of molybdenum, tungsten, and chromium halides and oxohalides were studied. It was found that the molybdenum- or tungsten-containing catalysts are active in the epoxidation of norbornene and the chromium-containing catalysts mediate oxidation to preferably give ketones. The optimal conditions for the synthesis of norcamphor on a selected catalyst were found by statistical treatment of experimental data.
