Composite cathode for IT-SOFC: Transition metal doped GdBaCo2O5+δ and Gd-doped ceria |

The performance of GdBaCo2/3Fe2/3Cu2/3O5+δ(FC-GBCO)– x wt.% Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 (GDC) (x=0 to 50) composite cathode has been investigated for their potential application in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The thermal expansion behavior shows that the TEC value of FC-GBCO cathode decreases greatly with GDC addition. The composite cathode of FC-GBCO - 40wt.% GDC (CG40) coated on Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 electrolyte showed the lowest area specific resistance (ASR) i.e., 0.041 Ωcm2 at 750 ºC. An electrolyte supported (300 μm thick) single-cell configuration of CG40/GDC/Ni-GDC attained a maximum power density of 800 mWcm-2 at 800 oC. The unique composite composition of CG40 exhibited enhanced electrochemical performance, reduced TEC and good chemical compatibility with CGO electrolyte compared with their FC-GBCO cathode for IT-SOFCs. |
