Without doubt, enzyme-catalyzed synthesis is becoming more and more important in contemporary polymer chemistry. Several years ago, the use of enzymes for synthetic purposes was still restricted to several specialized groups of biochemistry. The number of commercially available enzymes is increasing every year and new methods including genetic engineering are expected to provide custom-tailored enzymes at acceptable prices. The main reasons for the increasing acceptance of biocatalysts in polymer chemistry are the environmentally mild reaction conditions and high selectivity. Furthermore, they are accessible from natural renewable resources. The rapid depletion of petroleum reserves presents a challenging problem to the world. A new industrial trend is to move from petroleum-based to bio-based products and manufacturing process. In this presentation biocatalytic conversion of renewable resources to bioplastics will be discussed. |
