Electrochemical surface modification was one of the prominent methods to improve the interfacial adhesion. Al plate has been modified for different current densities in a phosphoric acid electrolyte solution. Contact angle analysis was used to determine the effect of current density on the surface properties of Al plate, including surface functionality and surface free energy. As a result, the total surface free energy of Al plate was drastically increased with increasing the current density of phosphoric acid solution, but levelled off after higher treatments. And, it was clearly found that the improvement of this treatment was in the specific component of surface free energy of Al plate. Lap shear test was also executed to study the effect of electrochemical surface modification on the adhesion strength at interface between Al plate and polyimide resins.
