Synthesis and Characterizations of Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone)- Polybenzimidazole Multiblock Copolymers via Low-temperature Coupling Reactions for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells |

A series of acid-base multiblock copolymers based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPES) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) were synthesized. Multiblock copolymers were synthesized by a coupling reaction between SPES and hydroxybiphenyl end capped PBI as hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks, respectively. The morphology and electrochemical properties of multiblock copolymer membranes were investigated by AFM and impedance analyzer, and compared with those of Nafion® and SPES random copolymers. An increase of sulfonated block size in the multiblock copolymer resulted in enhanced ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity. Ionic crosslinking is established between the sulfonic groups of SPES and the benzimidazole groups of PBI. The ionic crosslinking reduced the dimensional variation of the membranes by decreasing water uptake and membrane swelling. With these properties, acid-base multiblock copolymers seem promising for PEMs. |
