Effects of Clay Content on the Curing and Properties of PU/Clay Nanocomposites |

The effects of nanoscale clay content on the curing kinetics, thermal and physical properties of polyurethane (PU)/clay nanocomposites were elucidated in this study. Organically modified clay was used to enhance its compatibility with the PU system composed of isophrone diisocyanate and trifunctional polypropylene glycol. The amount of the clay was changed up to 5 phr (parts per hundred of the PU resin). Using the thermal analysis data measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the curing behavior of the PU/clay nanocomposites has been analyzed as a function of clay content. The glass transition temperatures of the PU/clay nanocomposites obtained by DSC and thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) increased with increasing clay content. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize nanostructure of the PU/clay nanocomposites. |
