This study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of the effective microorganisms (EMs) for nutrients removal in columns filled with different media. Two columns were packed with fine sand and the other two were packed with sabulous clay, respectively. One column of each medium was amended with EMs, and the orther was blank for control. The reactors were fed municipal wastewater. The control columns without EMs removed 10~40% of COD from the municipal wastewater through volatilization, sorption and abiotic transformation, while the columns amended with EMs removed more COD from the migrating municipal wastewater than the control ones. The fine sand column amended with EMs removed 25% of COD more than the control column. The sabulous clay column removed 40% of COD more than the control one. The experimental results showed that the EMs had high efficiency in organic pollutant and nutrients removal.
