We have developed a simple and eco-friendly ball milling process to efficiently produce edge-functionalized graphite in solid state without involving hazardous chemicals such as H2SO4 and HNO3. First of all, we made the high yield of edge-carboxylated graphite (ECG) by a simple ball milling of pristine graphite in the presence of dry ice. We confirmed by various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements. The ECG and heat-treated ECG exhibited many superior structure-property characteristics with respect to its GO and heat-treated GO counterparts. Thus, the ball milling technique developed in this study could be regarded as a general approach toward low-cost, high-yield production of edge-functionalized graphene (EFG) with various functional groups of practical significance for mass production of multifunctional materials and devices based on graphene. |
