In order to understand the polymorphic behavior of hierarchical superstructures of asymmetric dendrimer, a pyrene-based asymmetric dendrimer (abbreviated as PM) was newly synthesized. PM exhibited the monotropic phase transition between a stable crystalline phase (K1) and a metastable crystalline phase (K2). PM formed two synclinically tilted crystalline superstructures: the 6.75 nm and 4.30 nm periodicities of layered structures for K1 and K2 phases, respectively. The stable K1 phase and metastable K2 were predominantly induced by the π-π interactions and hydrogen-bonds. UV-Vis and PL experiments indicated that the photo-physical properties of PM were directly related with their molecular packing superstructures.
