The initial stage of sintering of ZrO2 and 3-YSZ (insert size range from 20 to 100nm) nanoparticles synthesized by solution-based flame methods was carried out studied in an aerosol system. By comparing the sintering rate of the particles with those predicted by classical sintering models, it was determined that the mass transport mechanism changed from total surface transport to surface diffusion control with increasing sintering temperature for ZrO2 nanoparticles. As expected, neck growth rate increased considerably with decreasing particle size and increasing sintering temperature, even in the range of nano-size. For the 3-YSZ nanoparticles, the neck growth rate was slower than that for equal sized pure zirconia nanoparticles. It suggested that mass transport from surface of the 3-YSZ particles was retarded by the presence of the yttrium ion during the initial stage of sintering. Under the very dilute particle concentration condition of this study, classical bulk sintering models appear to provide an adequate representation of crystalline nanoparticle sintering rate. |
