Anisotropic disk-shaped laponite structure makes it possible to interact with themselves; negatively charged face interact with positively charged rim that makes colloidal gel or glass. This structural arresting phenomenon called aging is occurred by increasing time and the concentration of the laponite solution. Laponite interaction in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) or poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution is changed by polymer adsorption on laponite clay. This colloid-polymer interaction changes the phase transition concentration of laponite suspension. Here, Light Scattering (LS) and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) were performed to probe the influence of polymer in laponite suspension. Scattering data show that when polymer chains are added to the colloidal system, the microstructural changes are found to depend on (i) colloid-polymer size ratio, (ii) laponite and polymer concentration (iii) hydrogen bonding strength. |
