A series of new molecular disks (RDn) was synthesized via the chemical attachment of six cyanobiphenyl calamitic (rod) mesogens (R) linked to the triphenyl discotic (disk) mesogen (D) with a series of six alkyl chain linkages (n = 6-12). DSC, POM, 1D/2D WAXD, and SAED allowed us to identify three ordered phases below the isotropization temperature and molecular packings in their ordered phases. Both triphenyl discotic mesogens and cyanobiphenyl calamitic mesogens were completely interdigitated. RD12 exhibited a biaxial N molecular orientation under a DC electric field. Under a vertical AC electric field, molecular frustrations of RD12 occurred in a consequence of the competition among rods attached to both sides of the disk molecule. |
