An alginate has been used in a wide range of fields. However, high molecular weigh alginate(HMWA) limits its application of specific fields caused by its high viscosity and poor solubility in water. In our previous study, HMWA was successfully depolymerized by hydroxy radical (·OH) with a optimized process for a high yield of low molecular weight saccharide. Various molecular weights of depolymerized alginate were used for controlling the size of silver alginate particles(SAP). In order to obtain SAP with different silver contents, the concentration of silver nitrate was systematically controlled. The SAP prepared were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD and particle size analyzer. The low molecular weight silver alginates were dramatically effective to inhibit the growth of S.aureus and E.coli at minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of 350 ppm. The antibacterial activities of the materials were determined by measuring MIC and optical density of liquid culture at 600 nm. |
