Impact of the Membrane Treatment Process on the Cell Performance of Anion Exchange Membrane-Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cells |

Regenerative fuel cells, especially AEM-URFCs, can take place in the position of fossil fuel as an alternative due to zero emission. AEM is one of the most important key components has a vital impact on the cell performance of AEM-URFCs. The AEMs with commercial catalyts (Pt/C/Ir-black) and ionomer, which are called membrane electrode assembly, were treated in KOH solution with different solvents and concentrations. The Br- ion content inside the AEMs, was varied by the swelling of AEM in various solvents. The EDS and FTIR analysis reveals the ion exchange and damages inside the AEM polymer side chain respectively. The MEA treated with 1.0 M KOH (25/75 vol. % of isopropyl alcohol/deionized water) shows the maximum Br- ion exchange and cell performance (215.0 mA/cm2 (FC) and 65.0 mA/cm2 (WE) at 0.5 V and 2.0 V respectively). This study can open a way for AEM pretreatment. |
