Side chain liquid crystalline polymers, (propylsulfonylundecylthio) methyl-substituted polyoxyethylene (3S11EO), (octylsulfonylhexylthio) methyl-substituted polyoxyethylene (8S6EO), (undecylsulfonylpropylthio) methyl-substituted polyoxyethylene (11S3EO), were synthesized. Characterization and thermal behavior of these polymers were studied by NMR, DSC, FT-IR, POM, and X-ray scattering. POM showed that all the sample synthesized had highly ordered smectic phases at room temperature. From SAXS measurements, it was found that the layer thickness of the smectic phase corresponds to twice the extended side chain length. Particularly, it could be inferred from FT-IR measurements with temperature that thermal transition with a large enthalpy was much related to the weakening of dipole-dipole interaction between sulfone groups of theses polymers. In other words, such strong dipole-dipole interactions are of great importance for the structure formation of liquid crystals. Also, thermal behaviors of these side chain liquid crystalline polymers were systematically changed by variation of position of the sulfone groups in side chains.
