Although monofilaments have been commonly used in industries, most are non-biodegradable, which is unfavorable for biomedical applications. Although biodegradable polymers offer benefit, they are still limited by their weak properties. A novel solid-state drawing (SSD) process has been designed to highly improve mechanical properties of both PA and PLLA monofilaments in this study. The monofilaments exhibit increased tensile strength and also, SSD can not only promote α-crystal, but also smoothen the surface. To apply SSD-monofilaments with superior properties to vascular stents, a shaped-annealing (SA) process has been designed as the follow-up process after SSD. Using this process, vascular stents composed of SSD-monofilaments can be fabricated. It is confirmed that spring-shaped stents have good recovery and high strength. In conclusion, this study shows improved mechanical properties of both tensile and compressive strength simultaneously and potential for biomedical applications. |
