Controllingthe Orientation of Block Copolymer Microdomainsin Bilayer Structuresvia Entropic Interactions |

Block copolymer(BCPs) lithography has attracted attention due to its cost effectiveness, high resolution, and compatibility with well-established processing techniques. Obtaining well-ordered structures is critical important for applications. In this study, we synthesized cross-linkable cylinder forming BCPs, PMMA-b-P(S-r-ketene), in which cross-linkable ketene groups were included. Next, we assembled bilayered BCP films being comprised of underlying cross-linked cylinder and top lamellar layers. Interestingly, the top lamellar layer exhibited perpendicular orientations, without reference to size of domain spacing (D0) of underlying cylinder layers. This orientation was ascribed to the entropically driven nematic interactions between these two layers and the total free energy of this system was theoretically considered. In the work, the orientation of top lamellar films as functions of film thickness and D0 of underlying cylinder layers was systematically investigated. |
