Assembly of polymers bearing ionic species in their repeating unit onto solid surfaces mainly utilizes the primary inter- and intramolecular interactions of electrostatic forces. However, secondary forces such as hydrogen bondings and hydrophobic interactions are also indispensible for the adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto neutral surfaces as well as the assembly in solution states. This talk presents that the adsorption/assembly phenomena of polyelectrolyte molecules becomes a basis for applications in the muticomponent patterning of polyelectrolyte multilayers, the electron injection layer in polymer light-emitting diodes, and artificial photosynthetic devices. |
