Direct conversion of polyol to ethylene glycol |

The direct synthesis of ethylene glycol from polyol components such as sorbitol, xylitol and glycerol was investigated using metal carbide catalysts. The new schemes for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by reacting ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid are recommended for an eco-friendly process. The types of carbide catalysts and the solvent effects are studied for the feasible process development, and the possibility of microchannel-type reactor application is also fundamentally investigated by calculating the proper fluid flow patterns in channels using a FLUENT program. The project has been financially supported by the grant from the Industrial Source Technology Development Programs (2012-10042712) of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) of Korea. |
