Water solubility of conjugated polymers may offer many applications. Potential applications of water-soluble conjugated polymers include the light-emitting diode and new materials for hollow-capsules through a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, and bio- or chemo-sensors. We synthesized poly[9,9-bis(3’-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-bis(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)fluorene] and poly[9,9-bis(3’,3’-(disulfonate)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-bis(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)fluorene] by the palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The ammonium polyelectrolyte was obtained through a treatment on the terminal amino groups. The characterization of novel cationic and anionic water-soluble conjugated polyelectrolytes based on the polyfluorene derivatives with amino- and sulfonate- terminal groups are discussed. |
