Chiral ester monomer (CEMA), new photoresponsive optical active monomer, was synthesized by the reaction of 2-acryloylaminopropionic acid and 4-{4-[2-(2-Bromo-ethoxy) -ethoxy]-phenyl-azo}benzonitrile. The CEMA and MMA were polymerized in the presence of radical initiator AIBN to produce four kinds of the corresponding copolymers. The resulting copolymeric thin films exhibited fundamental characteristics for reversible optical digital data storage media. In addition, thick films prepared from the copolymers were useful to holographic memory devices by a two wave mixing technique. Measurements of photoinduced birefringence and polarization holography recording confirmed that the reorientation of azobenzene group in the copolymer is responsible for the grating formation. |
