A novel chiral azobenzene dendrimer (CA6D) was newly designed and synthesized via Steglich esterification reaction. Chemical structures and purities of CA6D and its intermediates were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MALDI-ToF, and EA mass analysis. Based on the structure sensitive XRD experiments combined with DSC and POM results, it was found that CA6D constructed a low-ordered chiral smectic liquid crystalline phase (Sm*) at high temperature and a tilted chiral smectic crystalline phase (Cr*) at low temperature transitions. The photo reversible phase transition behaviors of CA6D compound were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The peculiar trans to cis and cis to trans photoisomerization process of CA6D compound is very useful and attractive for light-driven molecular switches.
