Nature provides wonderful inspiration and justification for the development of hierarchical structures in synthetic materials. The balance in structure provides balance in performance and properties, while consuming minimal resources (e.g. energy, materials) during development. In this paper, an overview is presented of recent efforts in our group to build hierarchical structures. Primary emphasis will be placed on new strategies to define nanoparticle stripes, grids, and ribbons. We demonstrate a general process, which relies upon simple physics and specific tailored chemistry, for developing quantum dot assemblies that have nanoscale lengths in one or two dimensions and centimeter or longer lengths in a third dimension. The assemblies can be multicomponent and are created sans lithography, thus opening new opportunities for the creation of advanced structures and devices. |
