In recent year, there has been significant research investments in the development of flexible display technology. The recent convergence of many technolgies is accelerating the flexible display closer to commercial reality. Here, we report solid-state, flexible electrochemiluminescent (ECL) cell using light-emitting gel electrolytes. The gel electrolytes were formulated by mixing a network-forming polymer, ionic liquid, and metal complex luminophore. The resulting ion gels exhibit good mechanical strength and high ionic conductivity. By sandwiching the gel electrolyte with two electrode, we could demonstrate flexible ECL devices. The ECLs can be operated under an AC bias and exhibit a low operating voltage of ± 2 V with a maximum luminance of 90 cd/m2. We believe that this ECL device can be applied toward various uses, including wearable devices and ubiquitous display systems. |
