Fibers derived from PAN with different diameters were tensile tested for two or three different gauge lengths. A mixed-mode Weibull distribution function, adapted for the length dependence of fiber strength, was used to model the tensile data. Mode I critical stress intensity factor, KIC tests were also performed on cross-ply [0°/90°]12 carbon fibers/epoxy composites to obtain the interlaminar critical strain energy release rate, GIC. It was found that the diameter effect in axial direction was almost similar for all fibers tested. This result suggests that the tensile strength obtained for a certain gauge length is a meaningful measure as a representative strength of the fiber strength. |
