Directional melt crystallization is a novel suitable method for preparing through-thickness porous membranes. It is a cheap, simple and defect-free method. In addition, aligned porous structures formed by this method have uniform membrane properties. In this study, we prepared aligned through-thickness porous membranes of a thermoplastic elastomer using the directional melt crystallization. By controlling the movement of a sample toward a liquid nitrogen reservoir, the nucleation and growth of solvent crystals were regulated to produce uni-directional crystals. In preparing membranes, we changed the critical variables such as solvent, freezing rate and concentration. From the results of mechanical properties and porosities, the through-thickness pores was found to be helpful for improving resistance against compression. This study will provide key fundamentals for the development of future polymeric foams and porous membranes. |
