The cross-linked polyethylene has been widely used as an insulating material for electric wires and cables because of its high insulating characteristics. XLPE does not dissolve in solvents and melt by heat owing to the cross-linking network structure. However, it is very difficult to reuse such a thermosetting resin, therefore, in present, most of waste cross-linked polyethylene have been incinerated or disposed of in landfills. We investigated the method to recover thermoplastic polyethylene from cross-linked polyethylene using supercritical fluids. The cross-linked polyethylene cable can be completely re-plasticized in supercritical methanol in a short time, and the effect of several process parameters was investigated. |
