Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted enormous interest from both academia and industry, since they show remarkable mechanical and electrical properties. In particular, exceptional mechanical properties of CNTs make them an ideal reinforcing material for polymer nanocomposites. Recently, several researchers have attempted to prepare polymer/CNT nanocomposites using a compatibilizer which strongly interacts with both the CNTs and polymer. In this study, we synthesize a new compatibilizer composed of polythiophene and PMMA with controlled graft density and degree of polymerization for poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile)/MWCNT composite. The degree of interaction of the compatibilizer with MWCNT is investigated by fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The effect of the graft density and the degree of polymerization of PMMA in the compatibilizer on the dispersion of MWCNT in SAN matrix and mechanical properties of SAN/MWCNT nanocomposites is examined as a function of the MWCNT content. |
