Properties of flexible Polyurethane Foams Prepared with the Recovered Polyol from Old Automotive Seats |

Automotive seats are made of flexible polyurethane (PU) foams. Recycling of the automotive seats are required to improve the sustainability of automotive industries. Glycolysis of flexible polyurethane foams (FPUFs) is one of the most attractive methods for recovering the renewable polyols due to its mild reaction conditions. In this paper, recycled polyols were obtained via glycolysis of the automotive seat scraps and chemical modification of the recovered polyol, and characteristics of the recycled polyols were investigated. The recycled polyols had higher hydroxyl value and showed higher reactivity compared with conventional polyether polyol for FPUFs. The recycled polyols could be mixed with conventional polyether polyol up to 50 wt% of the polyol to prepare FPUFs without deterioration of applicability. It was found that physical properties of FPUFs based on recycled polyols are comparable to those of the conventional FPUFs and could be used for the various applications of FPUFs. |
