Liquid crystals(LCs), having property intermediate between liquid and solid, have been largely studied because their behavior based on intermolecular interaction allows for readily controllable self-assembly behavior upon external stimuli. Manipulation on defect structure that originates from distorted molecular arrangement has been considered critical because this study can be applied in lithography and nanotechnology, giving essential insights in defect nature. Substrate-dependent behavior along with surface treatment is already reported a lot, therefore a new strategy for controlling defects is required. To accomplish this we suggest a facile way to manipulate smectic defect structures with aid of antagonistic surface condition, confinement and rubbing simultaneously. Under altered anchoring and rubbing condition, different defect structures were formed in periodic manner. The resultant textures of each LC structures as well as molecular-scale modeling are discussed in this work. |
