Isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR) is copolymer of isobutylene with a small amount if isoprene, which represent sites that allow cross-linking. IIR is largely a saturated elastomer with no double bonds, it has excellent resistance to ozone, oxygen, chemicals and heat. We have synthesized organic modifiers by the reaction of triethanolamine or 2,2’,2’’,2’’’-ethylenedinitrilotetraethanol and 1-bromohexdecane at 115oC for 24h. The synthesized organic modifiers were used to modify Na+-MMT by ion exchange reaction. From the results of X-ray diffraction, we could observe the increases of the interlayer distance of OMMT after modification. IIR/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared by melt-compounding using a Brabender mixer followed by hot-press vulcanization in the presence of sulfur and additives. The effect of the chemical structure of organic modifiers on the dispersion properties of OMMT in IIR matrix, and the mechanical properties of IIR/OMMT nanocomposites will be further discussed. |
