For the preparation of isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR) nanocomposites, we have synthesized a various organic modifiers containing allyl groups and carboxylic acid with different alkyl chain length using THF as a solvent. After modification of Na+-MMT with organic modifiers by ion exchange reaction, the changes of d-spacing of OMMT were studied by X-ray diffraction. It was observed that d-spacing of OMMT was increased with the alkyl chain length of modifier. IIR/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared by both melt-compounding and solution process followed by hot-press vulcanization. Tensile strength of IIR/OMMT nanocomposites prepared from solution process was higher than that of IIR/OMMT nanocomposites from melt-compounding. When the solution process was used, IIR/OMMT nanocomposites provided further improvement in mechanical properties, indicating that the interaction between IIR and OMMT in solvent medium was better than in melt state. |
