The general requirements for fuel cell membranes are high proton conductivity, low fuel permeability, chemical, mechanical and thermal stability over long periods of use in the presence of oxidizing and reducing species as well as reasonable cost. Especially, the stability of the polymer electrolyte membrane in Fenton’s solution has been recognized as an important indication of the durability of the membranes. We synthesized graft copolymers containing various sulfonic acid or phosphonic acid for fuel cell membrane. In this search, we studied thermal and chemical stability of acid containing graft copolymers. For oxidative stability, the weight loss and visual observation of the membranes in Fenton’s solution were evaluated. Thermal stability of membranes was investigated using TGA under nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere. |
