Perfluorinated ionomer membranes have widely been used for polymer electrolyte membrane of PEMFC, because of high proton conductivity due to the microphase-separated morphology of the membrane. However, these membranes are very expensive and limited in the temperature range for PEMFC. In this study, a new polymer electrolyte membrane, which is durable, lower in cost and higher in proton conductivity, is prepared. For this purpose, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(styrene-co-styrene sulfonic acid) is synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization and blended with poly (vinylidene fluoride) that would be expected responsible for good mechanical and chemical stability. This blend self-assembles into a microphase separated structure on a nanometer scale. The morphology and the proton conductivity of the membrane prepared in this study are examined as functions of the block copolymer composition and the blend ratio. |
