In fabrication of common PAN fiber has been generally achieved by various conventional techniques by means of electro-spinning, wet-spinning, crystallization, or molding and templating. In some of these strategies for the fabrication of fibers having nano and micro porosity, however, it is difficult to control the morphology precisely, due to the complicated technique, whereas others affected by not only internal variable but also other external environment like humidity or temperature demanding other steps to make porosity which is time consuming. Here, we have developed a simple approach for the fabrication of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) microfibers in a hydrodynamic flow-focusing microfluidic system. The synthesis of PAN microfibers is based on the regeneration of PAN from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) by simply contacting with a DMSO-containing water phase. The shape and size of PAN fibers were controlled by changing the flow rates of the PAN solution and the surrounding sheath fluid. |
