Polycarbonate (PC) is an important engineering thermoplastic material with good mechanical and optical properties for various industrial applications. It can be produced by an interfacial phosgenation process and melt transesterification process. In recent years, the melt transesterification of PC with the starting materials 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (Bisphenol-A, BP-A) and diphenyl carbonate (DPC) is becoming more important, since it is regarded as an environmentally benign production technique. In the present work, the melt transesterification of polycarbonate (PC) by diphenyl carbonate (DPC) and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (Bisphenol-A, BP-A) was studied in the absence of catalyst and high molecular weight polycarbonates were prepared. The effect of different reaction parameters namely, reaction temperature and reaction time was studied on the different properties of polycarbonate. |
