Anion exchange membranes were prepared and evaluated as polymer electrolytes for an anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC). Quaternized multi-block copolymers were synthesized by Ni(0)-catalyzed coupling polymerization of flexible hydrophobic segments made from 4,4’-difluorodiphenyl sulfone and 4,4’-dihydroxybenzophenone and rigid hydrophilic segments made from 2,5-dichlorobenzoyl chloride and diphenyl ether. Membranes with various quaternization levels were successfully cast from N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone. An increase of hydrophilic block molar ratio in the copolymer resulted in enhanced ion exchange capacity and conductivity values. We have investigated their physical/chemical properties, morphology and AEMFC performance. |
